Anna Hore and brother Jack were cycling down the  Leeds and Liverpool Canal by Dover Lock, in Abram, when things took a turn for the worse.

Jack, who celebrates his ninth birthday today, took a tumble on some uneven land and fell into the canal, with his bike falling on top of him.

But his 13-year-old sister was quick to react, jumping off her bike and racing to his aid. She grabbed the clothing of her struggling brother and dragged him out of the  water.

And now Anna is modestly claiming that she was doing what any other big sister would do.

But the 15th Wigan Boys’ Brigade & 15th Wigan Girls’ Association thought it was something worth recognising – and she has now been awarded the Mark Fleming Memorial Shield for outstanding achievement."

John's Blog » The Boys Brigade: "When I was about 10 I had a number of friends at a different school and many of them were members of the Boys’ Brigade. One day one of my best friends, Andy Macleod, persuaded me to come along to the band practice where a bunch of people got together to play drums and bugles and march around the place. I loved it. They were a really good group of people and it was good fun. After I turned up a few times it was suggested to me that, really, if I wanted to keep coming, I ought to actually join the Boys Brigade.

There was one issue though; the church. The Boys Brigade, certainly in Scotland, despite being advertised as a “Christian” organisation is actually seen as a Protestant organisation and this was a bit of a concern to my Roman Catholic parents. I was really keen to join and didn’t really see this as an issue but it took a little while and some persuading from the then captain Bob Goodall, for my parents to let me join. In the end though they gave in and I became one of only three Catholics in the company. Ironically I was actually too young by about a month to join the Company section, but they let me in anyway.

School appeal brings smiles to Uganda (From Warrington Guardian): "GENEROUS donors in Warrington have helped put huge smiles on the faces of poor schoolchildren in Uganda by supporting a charity appeal for school equipment.

The school packs scheme, run by international children’s charity Global Care, asked for stationery basics to help break down barriers to education for poor children in Africa.

In Uganda children have to provide their own equipment for school, and because many families can not even afford pencils, youngsters go to school empty-handed with their opportunities for learning severely reduced.

A range of groups and individuals, including St Joseph’s Primary School, 2nd Warrington Boys Brigade, and the Methodist Ladies Fellowship at Penketh Methodist Church, donated more than 120 packs that have now been delivered.

The packs were handed out to pupils at the Ron Newby Memorial Primary School in Angorum, in the rural northern district of Soroti, by a team of UK volunteers who visited the region in October."

Celebrating 100 years of well spent youth - Diocese of Oxford: "The most annoying thing about my annual Boys’ Brigade (BB) camp is that the week beforehand seems to last forever, so when I woke up at 5.30am on Saturday I knew the next four and a half hours would really drag!

This summer around 30 young people, together with 10 leaders from four BB groups in North Oxfordshire held an annual camp at the CMC, a Christian residential centre near Pen-Sarn in North Wales. The camp started with a short service led by the Revd Dr Hugh White, vicar of Deddington. We then headed north in a convoy of vehicles. The estimated journey time was three and a half hours, but five hours (and a burnt out clutch) later we safely reached the centre.
The programme, each day started at 7.45am with room inspection, followed by a healthy breakfast before our daily activities. Each day ended with a film, devotions led by one of the leaders and ‘lights out’ at 11pm."

BOYS' Brigade Notes -- 1st Greenock Weekend Away: "Over the Greenock September weekend, 23 boys and two staff from 1st Greenock Company spent their time at Dalguise activity centre in Dunkeld. The boys were able to take part in activities such as archery, rifle shooting, quad biking, tree climbing and the giant swing which most boys love but one or two were not so keen since it followed quite closely after lunch. The weather was great, which was a blessing, since none of the rafts that were built in the raft building competition floated long enough to get from one side of the lake to the other, meaning everyone without exception got soaked! With the recent spell of dry weather, however, the challenge course was not nearly as muddy as it has been in previous years, something which the staff are sure mums were pleased about when unpacking the bags on Sunday night. The usual lack of sleep over the weekend meant the return bus journey was quite subdued with more than a handful of boys catching up on their sleep. Overall the weekend was a great success with the boys already asking if they can go back next year."

I was lucky enough to have great support and raised way over what I had hoped to raise. My main charities were Cancer Research and the uniformed youth organisations in Middlewich.

Here is how the money was divided up: £3,000 to Cancer Research; £400 between our four schools; £300 between three Over 60s clubs; £300 to the British Legion Poppy Appeal; £200 between the youth of Middlewich Football Club and Middlewich Cricket Club; £ 3,440 between the Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, Boys Brigade, Fire Cadets, Wych Centre, Rose Fete and the Middlewich Youth Theatre, and £100 to our volunteer photographer for Middlewich. For decades, the Boys' Brigade London District Central Brass Band was a flagship project for the organisation, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Tournament, Lord Mayor's Show, Wembley, The London Marathon, Christmas carolling in Trafalgar Square and many other top venues and events.

The central band stopped meeting in recent years following the passing of their highly respected, long standing conductor Dennis Morley. North London Brass is now working with the BB London District to relaunch and develop this valuable and worthwhile youth music project.

Many current brass players got their first taste of music and banding in The Boys' Brigade and North London Brass believes that it is partly through investment in youth projects like this that the future of brass banding can be ensured.

The 2nd Guernsey Boys Brigade also had a trip of a lifetime aboard, sailing the boats back to dock in Poole on Saturday night. Lieutenant, Malcolm Cleal who sailed with them, added “It’s definitely character building because the ships’ crew allowed the boys responsibility to be part of running the ship. They gained a great sense of empowerment in being able to steer a ship of that size and it’s something they’ll remember for a long time. They’ve also become more aware of their own capabilities and strengths”."

TEIGNMOUTH TODAY | NEWS | Couple quitting boys' brigade after 30 years | 2010: "A couple have taken a tough decision to quit the Teignmouth boys’ brigade after almost 30 years. ‘After we decided to call it a day, we sat down and cried, because it has been a lifetime’s work,’ said Jenny Thorpe, who has run the brigade with husband Charles. They retired after Charles’ hearing deteriorated, and it is a sad occasion for the dedicated couple, along with the lads and the local Baptist Church. Down the years hundreds of youngsters aged between five and 18 have passed through the 1st Teignmouth Boys’ Brigade and many still keep in touch. ‘We have enjoyed every minute of it. The brigade gives youngsters self-confidence and self-worth, and we teach them to put other people before themselves and have moral values,’ explained Jenny."

BB camp was a massive hit - Rutherglen Reformer: "THE school holidays might be in full swing now but summer started early for one group of local youngsters with a trip to Boys’ Brigade camp.

The camp, which took place at Whithaugh Park Adventure Centre in the Scottish Borders, was organised by the BB’s Cathkin District.

A total of 43 boys from the 229th, based at Cambuslang Parish Church’s St Andrew’s building, as well as BB lads from East Kilbride, Netherlee and Cathcart attended the weekend event, taking part in a number of activities including swimming, archery, kayaking and abseiling, as well as football and other team games."

Boys' Brigade members from Nottingham took part in EuroQuest:London: "BOYS' Brigade members from Nottingham were among 115 young people who took part in a competition in London.

Teams from across Europe competed in EuroQuest: London, which was organised by The Boys' Brigade UK.

The 25th Nottingham Boys' Brigade, from Warren Hill, came fourth with 324 points out of 18 teams of youngsters aged 16 to 25."

Being given a special certificate to mark his 50 years' service has marked a tremendous month for Mr Murray, development officer for Perth and Kinross Duke of Edinburgh Association.

He was also awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to the initiative, which was founded by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956."

Middlewich teenager to act as steward at royal garden party (From Middlewich Guardian): "A TEENAGER will soon be rubbing shoulders with the royal family after becoming the first person to gain the top award from Middlewich Boys’ Brigade.

Nick Brown, of Ash Grove, Middlewich, is the first member to be awarded the Queen’s Badge since the brigade started 25 years ago.

The 18-year-old has now been selected as one of the four ‘Queensmen’ from the north west who will act as steward during the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, July 20."
